Background of the Study

Cancer is a life-altering diagnosis that not only affects the physical health of patients but also has significant psychological implications. Depression is one of the most common mental health issues among cancer patients, often resulting from the stress of diagnosis, treatment side effects, and the uncertainty of prognosis. Depression can impair a patient's ability to cope with their illness, reduce treatment adherence, and worsen the overall quality of life. Oncology nurses, due to their proximity to patients, play a crucial role in identifying, managing, and alleviating symptoms of depression in cancer patients.

Borno State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri serves as a key healthcare provider for cancer patients in the region. Although the hospital offers oncology services, the mental health needs of cancer patients, particularly those related to depression, may not be fully addressed. Oncology nurses at the hospital are in a unique position to identify early signs of depression and provide timely interventions that can improve emotional well-being and enhance overall care.

This study aims to assess the role of oncology nurses in reducing depression among cancer patients at Borno State Specialist Hospital. The research will focus on how oncology nurses screen for depression, the interventions they implement, and the effectiveness of these interventions in improving patients' mental health outcomes. By examining the current practices and challenges faced by oncology nurses in managing depression, the study will provide valuable recommendations for improving the emotional support provided to cancer patients at the hospital.

This research is important in improving the overall holistic care of cancer patients in Maiduguri and ensuring that mental health needs are adequately met alongside physical health care.

Statement of the Problem (300 words)

Depression is a common yet often underrecognized condition among cancer patients in Nigeria. It can significantly affect the patient's overall well-being, leading to poor treatment adherence, decreased quality of life, and increased suffering. At Borno State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri, while oncology nurses are central to patient care, there may be gaps in the identification and management of depression among cancer patients. This is partly due to the lack of standardized screening tools for depression, inadequate training for nurses in mental health care, and limited resources for psychological interventions.

Many cancer patients at Borno State Specialist Hospital may not receive adequate support for depression, resulting in untreated emotional distress. This can lead to negative outcomes, such as worsened disease progression, reluctance to continue treatment, and diminished coping abilities. The oncology nurses at the hospital are crucial in identifying and addressing these mental health issues, but their role in managing depression has not been adequately assessed.

This study will assess the current role of oncology nurses in reducing depression among cancer patients at Borno State Specialist Hospital, identifying existing practices and challenges, and proposing solutions for improving the management of depression in the oncology care setting.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the role of oncology nurses in identifying and managing depression among cancer patients at Borno State Specialist Hospital.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions implemented by oncology nurses to reduce depression in cancer patients.

3. To identify challenges faced by oncology nurses in providing psychological support to cancer patients with depression.

Research Questions

1. What role do oncology nurses play in identifying and managing depression among cancer patients at Borno State Specialist Hospital?

2. What interventions do oncology nurses implement to reduce depression among cancer patients?

3. How effective are the interventions provided by oncology nurses in reducing depression and improving the mental health of cancer patients?

Research Hypotheses

1. H₀: Oncology nurses at Borno State Specialist Hospital do not significantly reduce depression among cancer patients.

2. H₀: There is no significant relationship between the interventions provided by oncology nurses and the reduction of depression in cancer patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on oncology nurses and cancer patients at Borno State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri. Limitations include the potential subjectivity in self-reported depression symptoms and nursing interventions, as well as the limited generalizability to other hospitals in Nigeria.
